Call Me Donovan
The Price of Loyalty

In this episode, recorded on March 11, I’m grappling with a stinging realization about the nature of business and personal loyalty. After a decade of bending over backwards to provide the very best service for a long-term client, I found out yesterday that I’m being “rewarded” by losing them as a client.

I dive deep into the paradoxical mindset I keep falling into—believing that everyone holds the same level of loyalty that I do. It feels like a personal “Groundhog Day” hell where no good deed goes unpunished. I’m struggling with the fact that after ten years, I wasn’t even given the courtesy of an opportunity to address whatever sparked this change.

Key Discussion Points:

  • The “Just Business” Fallacy: Why I think the line “it’s not personal, it’s just business” is absolute bullshit.
  • Lessons from 2012: I reflect on being terminated from my “dream job” after 13 years and the eye-opening moment when no one stood up for me.
  • The Danger of Over-Investing: Why I’m starting to re-evaluate my tendency to become friends with the people I do business with.
  • The Future of Trust: How this situation has led me to start trusting nothing and no one in a professional capacity.

What do you think about loyalty? Am I completely off base and expecting too much, or have you run into this same situation?. Let me know your thoughts by emailing me at [email protected].

The Podcast

Donovan was born and raised in the deep South. In the South, you have rednecks, religion, sports, and big trucks. Donovan isn’t and doesn’t relate to any of those things. His background is in technology, and he likes to think of himself as the enemy of ignorance and stupidity. Recently, he decided to get sober… for good. This means much of Call Me Donovan (formerly DDP) will be him discussing that continuous journey with all the ups and downs that go along with it.
