Hey, welcome back to another episode of “Call Me Donovan.” It’s episode 32, and today is Memorial Day, May 27th, 2024. It’s also been 366 days since I quit drinking. This milestone marks the longest period in my life without alcohol, surpassing my previous record from 2017-2018, when I celebrated a year of sobriety with some Apple Crown.

Speaking of Apple Crown, I still have fond memories of its taste, which ironically, I now recall when using Apple-scented Dawn Power Wash to clean dishes. Our dishwasher has been out of order since we bought our house in 2006, so we rely on this cleaning method and my daughter, who took over dish duty after my mom passed away (no, my mom wasn’t washing our dishes – listen and you’ll understand what that means).

Reflecting on the past year, it’s been incredibly positive. My business had its best year in 2023, partly because I was more engaged and set clear boundaries with my clients. Not drinking helped me stay focused and receptive to new opportunities. This time, my approach to sobriety is different—it’s a permanent lifestyle change, not just a temporary goal.

I also wanted to share my thoughts on Doctor Who. Episode 4, “73 Yards,” was surprisingly good—an 8.5 out of 10. It’s very Ruby-centric, with the Doctor barely appearing. The episode involves Ruby encountering a mysterious woman who stays exactly 73 yards away from her at all times. This episode was a well-crafted mystery, a stark contrast to the disappointing first two episodes of the season.

Lastly, my wife and I watched a movie called “Atlas” on Netflix. It stars Jennifer Lopez and Simu Liu. The plot revolves around an AI soldier deciding to end humanity to stop wars. The special effects were top-notch, and despite some typical tropes, it was an enjoyable watch—I’d rate it 8 out of 10. If you enjoy sci-fi, it’s worth checking out.
